CANTIGA – Madeline Gibbs & Philip Griffin

Voice and guitar: from Elizabethan shadows to luminous horizons

Cantiga – Madeline Gibbs (soprano) and Philip Griffin (classical guitar) – brings together two seasoned chamber musicians in a program that moves effortlessly from John Dowland to Jacob Collier. Madeline Gibbs, a Brisbane-based soprano with a special love for chamber and small vocal ensemble music, has built a rich career across operatic, oratorio, choral and early music, performing with ensembles such as One Equal Music, Fractio Modi, The Australian Voices and Brisbane Chamber Choir. Classical guitarist Philip Griffin complements her with his command of the instrument’s full spectrum, shaped by extensive performances across Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Together, Cantiga crafts programmes that highlight the intimate dialogue between voice and guitar – from Dowland’s Elizabethan melancholy through luminous art song to select modern voices like Joni Mitchell. Their sound prioritises clarity of text and line, warm instrumental colour, and an atmospheric depth that invites listeners into a refined, reflective musical world.
